About Dr. Carol

Carol A. Munschauer, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytical Association. She is also past president of the Psychoanalytic Society of Upstate New York. She is the founder of the Association of the Advancement of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, an affiliate of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology.

Since arriving back in her hometown of Buffalo in 1982, Dr. Munschauer has made it her personal mission to expand knowledge about the field of psychoanalysis both to the public and to various academic disciplines within the community. She has has been instrumental in bringing in speakers of interest both to local therapists and lay people in general.

During her time as President of the Psychoanalytic Society of Upstate New York, she expanded this local branch of the American Psychoanalytic Society from a small group of 8-10 Members to come to include a much larger body of Members, Friends and Affiliates ( about 150) and was able to raise awareness in the Upstate New York Community about the application of psychoanalysis to contemporary issues. Certain lectures on contemporary issues such as "Shame" (Andrew Morrison MD), "Hate" (Joseph Lichtenberg,M.D), "Attachment" (Joseph Lichtenberg, M.D), and "Fathers and Play" (James Herzog)to name a few, drew crowds of one hundred attendees.

Dr. Munschauer was awarded the Edith Sabshin National Teaching Prize in 2001 by the American Psychoanalytic Association for her contributions in teaching about psychoanalysis to lay people. She is also Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is in private practice and lives in nearby Amherst, New York, with her son Grant.

Dr. Munschauer is now the Founder of a new Society dedicated to her original mission of spreading knowledge about contemporary psychoanalysis to the Upstate New York area. This Society is called the Association for the Advancement of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. It will have as its two wings a dedication to both educating both the public about psychoanalysis and how it relates to every day life and contemporary culture, and also a commitment to enhancing the training of local students and therapists who remain interested in deepening their own knowledge of this developing field of study. The Association for the Advancement of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is a Chapter of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology.
